Budget Planner for Sri Lanka

By DreamFundSL · Updated October 2026

A budget is a plan for your money before the month starts. Done well, it shows you where the money goes and leaves room for savings. Here is a simple way to plan a monthly budget in rupees.

How to plan a monthly budget

  1. Add up your take-home income for the month.
  2. List your fixed costs: rent or housing loan, school fees, insurance, phone and internet, vehicle instalments.
  3. Estimate variable costs from the last two or three months: groceries, fuel or bus fares, electricity and water, eating out.
  4. Set a savings amount first, not with whatever is left over.
  5. Make sure the total is not above your income. If it is, trim variable costs before touching savings.

The 50/30/20 rule

A common starting point is to split take-home income into needs, wants and savings. It is a guide, not a law, and many families adjust it.

ShareGoes toExample on LKR 150,000
50%Needs: housing, food, transport, billsLKR 75,000
30%Wants: eating out, hobbies, outingsLKR 45,000
20%Savings and debt repaymentLKR 30,000

The figures above are an illustration only. If your needs already take more than half of your income, start with the needs you can reduce and a smaller, steady savings amount.

Common budgeting mistakes

Using DreamFundSL as your budget planner

In DreamFundSL you set a budget for each category and record transactions as they happen. The app shows how much of each budget is used, warns you when a category is close to its limit, and rolls everything into a monthly report. Because it also tracks bills and savings goals, your budget reflects your real commitments. See also our expense tracker guide.
