Family Budgeting in Sri Lanka
When several people earn and spend, a budget only works if everyone is looking at the same numbers. Here is how Sri Lankan families can budget together without arguments.
Start with a family money talk
- Agree on shared goals: an emergency fund, school fees, a home, a vehicle, a pilgrimage or a wedding.
- Decide what counts as a shared cost and what is personal spending.
- Give every adult a small personal allowance that needs no explanation.
Decide who does what
- One person acts as the family treasurer who reviews the numbers each month.
- Everyone records their own spending, ideally the same day.
- Large purchases above an agreed amount are discussed first.
If you support extended family
Many households help parents, siblings or relatives. Treat that support as a budget line, with a set amount, not as a surprise. If you lend money to relatives or friends, write it down with the date and the repayment plan.
Teaching children
Involve older children in simple decisions, like planning a family outing within a set budget. It teaches them that money has limits and choices.
