Emergency Fund Calculator for Sri Lanka
An emergency fund is money set aside for the unexpected: a job loss, a medical bill, a vehicle repair. A common guide is three to six months of essential expenses. Use the calculator to find your number.
Emergency fund calculator
How much should you save?
- 3 months: two earners, stable jobs and few dependants.
- 6 months: a good default for most families.
- 9 to 12 months: one income, irregular or self-employed income, health concerns or many dependants.
Count only essentials: housing, food, utilities, transport, insurance, loan payments, school fees and medicine. Leave out holidays and eating out.
Where to keep it
Keep it somewhere safe and easy to reach, separate from everyday spending, so you are not tempted to dip into it. It should be available quickly in a real emergency. Because it is for protection, not growth, safety and access matter more than returns.
Building it step by step
- Start with a small first goal, such as one month of expenses.
- Move a fixed amount as soon as income arrives.
- Top it up from bonuses and other windfalls.
- After using it, rebuild it before other goals.
